Water For People That Hate Water

The idea that adult people will open their mouths and say things like “I hate water,” is ridiculous but true. For those of you who openly or secretly fall into this category, I have listed a few drinks of water to try. The water on this list is ph balanced and has electrolytes added. What I have not included in this list are items like flavored water, sparkling water, or water enhancers. They are not helpful in hydration. While there are plenty of water offerings out there, these are just a few of my personal favorites. All of the waters on this list are also relatively easy to find at a convenience store, grocery store, or order online.

Core water was my favorite until I found Waiakea. Supposedly the Waiakea water comes from a well under a volcano in Hawaii and maybe that is where the great taste comes from. Maybe it is the blue container. I can’t say exactly why, but it is great to have on a hot summer day.

If for some reason you can not find any of the waters on this list to try for yourself, look for these things:

Alkaline

pH: 7.4 or higher

electrolytes

These particular waters are also quite expensive, generally retailing for over $2 per bottle. They also are not easily found in multi-bottle packs outside of the price clubs or online.

5 Tips To Change Your Diet Forever

Things to consider before changing your diet

About 50 to 60 years ago the United States government came up with a nutritional plan to ease people off of fatty meats and onto carbohydrates as so many Americans were suffering from heart disease. Most of the rest of the world adopted the same or similar plans and now most people are extremely out of shape. Here I offer a few tips to help anyone wanting to get their diet together.

  1. You need to be tired of your condition

Some people can change their diet just because it the right thing to do. But that is not the case for the vast majority of us. If you are not tired of one or more of these:

  • being out of shape
  • taking medication for high blood pressure, insulin, etc.
  • not being able to keep up with friends, family, children, grandchildren
  • Other issues related to poor diet

This list may not be for you.

  1. You need to plan your meals

Trying to “wing it” when changing the eating habits that you’ve form over the past 20, 30, 40, or more years of your life is a certain disaster. Trying to figure out what you are going to eat moments before you are going to eat every day requires too much brainpower. I would suggest taking one day out of the week to search for interesting meal ideas that fit your diet plan and prepare a week’s worth on that day. There are quite a few low carb recipes right here on ABVM that work great for just about any diet and do not require lots of preparation.

  1. You need to eat until you are full

Being hungry unnecessarily is a sure-fire way to end up back where you started. Any diet that leaves you hungry is not for you. You may have to try four or five diets before you find one to fit your lifestyle and that is ok.

  1. There is no such thing as a magic pill

You did not end up where you are right now overnight and you should not expect to get to where you want to be overnight either. Drugs like metformin do more harm than good and should be avoided at all costs.

  1. You have to stop emotional eating

Emotional eating is probably the hardest thing for people to quit. Emotional eating is not just when you are sad and depressed but also when you are happy and celebrating. Birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and other gatherings centered around food are bad for your new diet unless you are in control of the planning or have the strength to stay on course. More importantly, the good feelings you associate with these good times are what triggers depression eating.

The Number One Reason To Use Bing Search Engine

On ABVM we love rewards points. While some may argue about privacy, they are going to use your information in nefarious ways regardless. You might as well get something out of the deal.

When is the last time you heard someone say “Bing It,” ” Alexa It” or “Siri It?” Google has definitely cornered the market with searches but it doesn’t really matter which engine you use as long as you can find an answer to your inquiry.

Microsoft rewards is a cool reason to use the Bing search engine. Microsoft will give you points for using Bing to do searches. They also have games and quizzes that reward you with points as well as useless knowledge that you can impress your friends and family with.

You can use the points to do useful things like, make donations to your favorite charity, enter into raffles, and purchase Microsoft products.

There are new point-earning tasks to do every day aside from gaining points from just doing searches. The raffles are the coolest part in my opinion as for just a few hundred points you can win Xbox’s and Surface Pro tablets and Laptops. I’ve even seen the $2000+ Surface Studio in the raffle as well.

You can also use the points to purchase Mircosoft software and hardware directly. While you will not have enough points today or tomorrow, if you are hardcore enough you may be able to get there after a year or two.

The best thing about the whole situation is that you do not have to use Internet Explorer or Edge to participate. You can use any browser that allows you to have Bing as a search engine. The sign in or create a  Microsoft account and you can start collecting points and collecting freebies!

Ginger Beer aka The Mule, Refreshment With A Kick

Ginger Beer?

When it comes to spring and summer cocktails, lite and refreshing is the key. As the temperature begins to rise, and clothes become skimpy, adults tend to enjoy socializing with an alcoholic beverage. While most mixers are just cheap fillers, ginger beer adds a surprisingly refreshing kick that you are sure to enjoy.

One of my personal favorites over the last few years has become “The Mule.” The Moscow Mule (vodka), the Mexican Mule (tequila) or the American Mule (bourbon) added to a few ounces of ginger beer and a dash of lime juice creates a lite drink with a surprising kick.

While you may find recipes that substitute ginger beer with ginger ale, it will not nearly be the same drink. Ginger ale, like most sodas, is overly sweet and syrupy. Even the driest ginger ales don’t have half the kick that ginger beer does.

With all of that said, here I present to you a few unique takes on “the Mule.”

The Mexican Mule

1 oz El Mayor Tequila Blanco

4 oz ginger beer or diet ginger beer (less kick, no carbs)

1/2 oz of Santa Cruz Lime Juice

2 blackberries (garnish)

Served over ice in an old fashioned, double old fashioned or collins glass

The American Mule or Kentucky Mule

1 oz Bulleit Bourbon

4 oz ginger beer or diet ginger beer (less kick, no carbs)

1/2 oz of Santa Cruz Lime Juice

1 Lime Wedge (garnish)

Served in a mug or mason jar

Why I Don’t Fast

Fasting works for many people, so I am not saying fasting doesn’t work. I have never deemed fasting necessary for my diet. I am not saying that I will never fast either. At this point, I do not see a reason not to eat with all this food available.

As I evolve in my journey to understand my body, I have contemplated fasting from time to time. I have watched other people fast with great success, but eventually, get frustrated when their results slow down. Since I am not a doctor, I can only speak from a distant observation based on limited knowledge, but I see two reasons why they failed at fasting in the long term.

  1. Fasting in place of eating. When you are changing your diet, it can be difficult to figure out what to eat. As appose to falling off a low carb diet like keto altogether, many people resort to fasting. This can actually backfire on you if you begin to fast more than you eat.
  2. Fasting for too long. I have seen people go on fasts for a week or more. I guess when I was younger, I never imagined that it was healthy to go that long without eating. Fasting for long periods can help detox your body but it will also create a new normal for your body. Now eating is abnormal and will have a negative effect, at least until you get back into eating normally.

If fasting works for you, I implore you to continue with your journey. But if you are struggling with your diet and are looking for an easy way out, fasting is probably not the answer. It is just as addictive as eating and if unchecked can cause health issues just like any other extreme. If you like, love, hate or don’t know how to feel about fasting, drop a comment below. Let’s start a conversation about the controversial topic.

Affiliate Marketing Explained For Consumers

A Quick Rundown Of How It Works

Throughout my time as a blogger/vlogger, I’ve noticed somewhat of a backlash against affiliate marketing from consumers and I feel like it needs to be explained. As a consumer, affiliate marketing has no negative impact as the money your favorite blogger/vlogger receives does not cost you any extra coin. With that being said, I would like to explain the entire process in how the things you love to buy go from individual ingredients or parts to something you can pick up off the shelf or order online.

Manufacturer

The manufacturer is the beginning of the process. The manufacturer general receives ingredients or parts from other manufacturers, puts them together, packages the items and packs them for shipping. Manufacturers generally profit from increased efficiency and safety practices as well as sourcing the cheapest ingredients or parts. The manufacturer normally sells the finished goods to a distributor after a small mark-up. Some larger retailers buy direct from some manufacturers.

Distributor

A distributor is a middle man between manufacturers and retailers. Distributors often handle transportation as well as housing of the goods until the retail outlet can accommodate them. Distributors often operate locally or regionally. This allows them to keep up with trends and tailor their selection to accommodate retailers and consumers. The distributor adds a small markup to their cost for profit.

Brands and Retailers

The retailer is the entity in which you purchase. Amazon, Walmart, Target and Best Buy are some of the largest. Many brands such as Old Navy, H & M, Cotton On, and Express design and sell on their own. Many others such as Polo, Nautica, and Nike have their own brick and mortar locations and sell to other retailers. Retailers normally make the highest markup. Retail markups go from in the negative to plus 1000s of a percent over what they pay.

Affiliate Marketing and Influencers

Affiliate Marketers, influencers and other online marketers generally have deals with retailers and brands. Since the retailers and brands take the highest mark-up they normally do the most advertising. Affiliate marketers and influencers are just a modern way of advertising from the standpoint of the business. As a consumer, you should feel the same way. Sometimes marketers and influencers reach out to who they want to work with and sometimes the brands reach out. Either way, the other party has to accept. The terms are generally set by the larger entity which is normally the brand. If you would like more information about how it works, check out: Rakuten Advertising CJ Affiliates Impact

Surf and Turf Chowder – Pressure Cooker Recipe

Surf and Turf Chowder

A great hearty soup is not always the best option on a ketogenic or low carb diet, especially if you are looking for something premade. Normally there are potatoes, rice, bread, and added sugars are included. Here I present a healthy, flavorful, low carb alternative, Surf and Turf Chowder.

While you can make this recipe in a conventional oven, the directions here are for a pressure cooker. It only takes about 30 to 40 minutes to complete this recipe with the pressure cooker. Below I will have a link for a great pressure cooker for under $100.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb Top Sirloin Steak
  • 1 lb Chicken Breast or Thighs
  • 1 lb Shrimp (peeled and deveined)
  • 4 oz Cream Cheese
  • 1/2 Cup Heavy Whipping Cream
  • 1 Cup Unsweetened Almond Milk
  • Montreal Steak Seasoning
  • Garlic Parmesan Seasoning
  • Old Bay Seasoning

Directions

Chop the top Sirloin Steak and chicken into small chunks. Season the steak with the steak seasoning and the chicken with the garlic parmesan seasoning. Set your pressure cooker to cook meat for about 5 to 10 minutes and add a half cup of water with the seasoned meat. Meanwhile, peel the shrimp, if necessary and season with the Old Bay seasoning. Prepare your Cream Cheese, Heavy Whipping Cream and Almond Milk. The cream cheese does not need to be melted down. Release the steam off the steak and chicken and dump as much of the water off as you can. Add the rest of the ingredients and close the lid and cook for another 10 to 15  minutes.

Havit RGB Keyboard and Mouse

Save Your Money, Budget Doesn’t Always Mean Compromise

Havit Gaming Keyboard and Mouse Boxes
Havit Gaming Keyboard and Mouse Boxes

Are you subscribed to r/Battlestations? Do drool over those fancy RGB setups that are all the crazy in computer gaming? Are you also short on cash to upgrade your setup? Well, perhaps I have an answer to your lighting lust. Havit Gaming will quench your technolust for a fraction of the cost.

First and foremost, I must admit I am very much a controller fanboy. While I know using a mouse and keyboard are lightning-fast and provide a  tactical advantage, I just can’t put my controller down. I personally am not much of a competitive gamer anyway, and I grew up playing on consoles. But I do like a few games that are either, do not support controllers or controllers are not practical such as Planet Coaster and Cities: Skylines.

While Havit offers keyboard and mouse combos, I opted to purchase them separately as the keyboard and mouse I wanted were not offered as a set.

HAVIT HV-KB391L Gaming Keyboard
HAVIT HV-KB391L Gaming Keyboard

Keyboard

For the keyboard, I purchased the HAVIT HV-KB391L Gaming Keyboard. It is a membrane keyboard, not mechanical. Regardless, it has a great look with 3 lighting modes, rainbow, breathing and off. The keyboard also has the ability to change the directional key location. For me, the biggest challenge of this type of keyboard has been adjusting to larger keys. Outside of that, it has been great.

HAVIT MS760 Pro Gaming Mouse
HAVIT MS760 Pro Gaming Mouse

Mouse

For the mouse, I went with the HAVIT MS760 Pro Gaming Mouse. I chose this mouse as it has an interchangeable left panel. I particularly like the panel with 6 programmable buttons. If you are willing to program some shortcuts it is a lot like having a controller in my opinion. This mouse also sports 7 dpi modes (dots per inch) which means the sensitivity is adjustable. Each dpi level has a color assigned to it and pressing the plus or minus buttons on the mouse will quickly change the color and level. I could see this feature being useful for individuals who do photo editing or other tedious and intricate tasks. There are also 10 RGB lighting modes and an app you can download to change many of the functions. The biggest downside of the mouse so far is figuring out which drivers you may need to download to get all of the features enabled.

Conclusion

Outside of a few minor issues, the experience so far has been great. For right around $40 USD I have a gaming setup that I truly enjoy. If you have $150+ to spend on a keyboard and mouse setup, knock yourself out. For the rest of us, Havit Gaming has a nice offering.

Grilled Zucchini and Squash – Recipe

Grilled Squash and Zucchini
Grilled Squash and Zucchini

Squash and Zucchini can be fun

Squash and Zucchini are great veggies with lots of vitamins and nutrients. Many avoid these vegetables because of the taste but if seasoned and cooked properly, all can reap the many benefits of squash and zucchini.

I personally enjoy grilling. While I prefer to grill outside with charcoal, grilling inside on a griddle or George Foreman grill can be quite enjoyable when the weather is not so great.

Squash and Zucchini on the Foreman Grill
